From software to people management
I joined as SW engineer in a team to create supervision software for commuter trains in Germany, Italy, UK and France. As an engineering team, we needed an effective way of managing design and development activities, to support the daily collaboration as well as quick task prioritization. Since I am interested in agile SW methodologies, my next step was to take the role as scrum master and apply an agile development framework. My responsibility was to assist the daily work of the team members, contribute to increasing the team efficiency and meeting the delivery deadlines. I enjoy the combination of project work, teamwork and people management. Which suits me very well today, in my current position as people manager of the traction control application team in Sweden.
Traction Control Domain Leader
I am managing the traction control application team of 18 engineers in Sweden. The team is developing traction control software for commuter trains and metros. The work includes SW deliveries to brand new trains, as well as updates to trains that have been in passenger service for a long time. Our trains runs for more than 20 years, and withstand changes in infrastructure and more. My work days is a mix of employee talks, project activities, process queries and resource planning. The best thing about my job is the team members, everyone is knowledgeable, committed, and has a high level of trust in each other. Their solution-oriented approach, and innovativeness to change old ways, is fantastic.
Being part of a team driven by curiosity & inventiveness
I get highly motivated when I get to work in a team that is driven by curiosity, collaboration and technical creativity! Trains attract engineers of all ages, and there is always more to learn and new technology & tools available.
Be honest about your goals
Tell your manager and colleagues what you want to learn more about or which skills you wish to improve. They may be able to assign you tasks that align with your interests and supporting your personal development plan. Knowing your preferences, strengths and weaknesses makes it easier for you to ask for help when needed. Sharing your questions, and supporting on answers, creates an openness that enables dialogue and exchange of experiences, giving everyone an opportunity to grow.
From simulator to successful train verification
A strong memory for me is when I was part of a validation team on a train in the north of France. It was a great experience, and nervous, to test train in real life! The supervision software and tests met the requirements, and the software package could be rolled out across the train fleet on time.
