In a world where we’re often told to be ourselves, not many of us actually are. My best advice is to genuinely strive to be authentic. It can be difficult and scary, but at the end of the day, we need voices that dare to stand out. That said, be mindful of how you use AI... it’s easy to point out when someone relies too heavily on it. So, when applying for a job or sending emails, use AI primarily as a grammar and spelling check rather than as the main thing! I love to meet the real you soon!

Alstom EMEA

Company

What do you like about your job and the company?

Working at Alstom is exciting for me due to the unique opportunity to navigate and thrive within a large international matrix organisation. It allows me to focus on continuous learning and the improvement of processes, which I find both challenging and rewarding. The dynamic nature of the organisation keeps me engaged, and I’m constantly inspired by the talented individuals with whom I get to work. Additionally, I am increasing my knowledge in technology and engineering, for example in areas such as obsolescence management. There truly is a wealth of knowledge and innovation in the railway industry that I love exploring.

Greatest achievements

One of my key contributions across our various sites, as well as improving alignment within the larger organisation, has been the initiation of ‘Young Alstom,’ which I developed with a talented colleague. We recognised that, while several sites in the Netherlands have merged into Alstom over the last decade, they often remain physically and culturally apart. We also noticed that young people within the company have similar needs but aren't connected to each other. To address this, we established a solid foundation for the initiative. With strong support and endorsement from management, we are excited to officially launch the program in 2025. It will foster greater connection and engagement among our young employees, support their knowledge and their professional and individual growth, and ultimately strengthen our business objectives and connections to other companies in the sector as well.

Stepping out of your comfort zone is crucial for personal and professional growth. For me, moving from France to Romania was a transformative experience that expanded my horizons and enhanced my adaptability. It taught me to navigate new environments and cultures, enriching my perspective. Similarly, transitioning from Human Resources to procurement allowed me to develop new skills and insights. This shift has enabled me to understand business processes more deeply and contribute more significantly to my organization. Embracing these changes has ultimately empowered me to take on challenges and seize opportunities that I might have previously overlooked.

Network. Everyone talks about networking, but it truly is a life hack. After University grades are gone, you'll still be reviewed once a year or so, but the amount of written feedback is much more limited. Building a strong network is now your new good grades and it will strongly dictate your future career opportunities. Also remember that networking is not only for those in positions above you, so be nice to everyone. Buy in. Buy in to the culture, to the social and to the company. Show an interest and ask questions. This will make your worklife become more enjoyable and also help you with your networking, especially with those in positions above you as they are more bound to company values and culture.
